Jerusalem At Boiling Point Of Polarization And Violence, EU Report Says

LONDON, March 22, 2015 (WAFA) – A report put together by heads of European missions in Jerusalem warned that the city has reached a dangerous boiling point, and that the rising violence and polarization are threatening the “viability of the two-state solution,” revealed the Guardian.

The report also called for further sanctions against products made in the settlements and steps against “known violent settlers.”

“2014 has been distinguished by a number of specific, disturbing and often violent developments,” said the report. “These incidents have occurred against the background of the systematic increase in settlement activity, tensions over the Haram al-Sharif and rising levels of tensions and acts of violence on both sides.”

“Almost on a daily basis settlers and national religious activists have ascended on to the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount under the protection of Israeli forces,” the report said.

The Guardian quoted “well-informed European sources” who said the document, which is now being discussed in Brussels, “reflects a strong desire from European governments for additional measures against Israel over its continued settlement-building.”

The report deemed increasing tensions over the status of the Haram al-Sharif compound as well as heavy-handed policing and punitive measures, including evictions and home demolitions by Israeli forces, responsible for the growing clashes.

The report comes as the US administration announced plans to “reassess” its Israeli-Palestinian peace policy in light of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements before the election earlier this week.

During the election campaign, Netanyahu vowed to continue settlement-building in occupied East Jerusalem in defiance of the international community, including the EU and Washington, which strongly oppose Jewish settlement construction in Jerusalem.

He said, in a final bid to win over right-wing support on the last day before the results were to be counted, that he would not permit a Palestinian state to be created if he is re-elected.
